to fuss over one’s dress, especially before the mirror.

This is a good example of the most difficult thing about painting, which is knowing when to stop. That last dash of detail can make or break a painting. Knowing when it’s needed (and when it’s not) never seems to get any easier.

I took it too far with the yellow; I liked it a lot better without, and that additional color just pushed it a little too far. This is one reason I always take photos and sketch over the top as I’m deciding what to do next.
